Smithville to host Jasper Fun Fair June 3rd, citywide project now past half-way point in development

JASPER (Indiana) – Smithville Fiber will host the Jasper Fun Fair at the Jasper Middle School Saturday, June 3. The afternoon event will offer Jasper residents the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of fun events (bouncy house, face painting, basketball shoots, door prizes and goodie bags) and free food (hot dogs, drinks and ice cream) while having an opportunity to learn more about the Smithville Fiber GigaCity project.

“Now that we’ve reached year three of a five-year project, it’s important that Jasper residents have an opportunity to find out just how high-tech gigabit-level fiber can positively simplify lives and transform their homes and businesses,” said John Patten, president of Smithville. “It’s even better when everyone can do this in an atmosphere of fun on a Saturday afternoon.”

Patten explained that the first year of the project, which will turn Jasper into Indiana’s first true fiber-based GigaCity, was taken up with engineering, planning and development. Smithville began building its Jasper fiber network in earnest at the beginning of the second year of the project, and promptly encountered construction challenges that included areas that were more rocky and difficult to build in. Despite those challenges, Smithville was able to build out and light up three designated neighborhoods in Jasper during that second year.

As the project has moved into year three, construction has intensified. To date a total of seven “fiberhoods” have been built out and more than 1,500 homes can now receive Smithville’s high-speed fiber in the new areas. The total project has been divided into just over 30 fiberhoods, a third of which are already completed or presently under construction.

“As our fiber services actually become more available in Jasper, we think it’s important that residents know why fiber internet is important to the city and to them,” said Melissa Wright, Project Manager for the Smithville Fiber GigaCity project. “Our Jasper Fun Fair will give Jasper families a chance to find out about the many benefits fiber brings, all in a relaxed atmosphere of fun.”

Smithville technicians and internet experts will be on hand June 3rd at the Jasper Middle School to make presentations about the benefits of fiber and other Smithville services. The fair is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and conclude at 5 p.m., rain or shine.
