Essential Cybersecurity Tips: 5 Ways to Stay Safe Online

In today’s digital world, cybersecurity isn’t just a tech issue; it’s a personal responsibility. Whether you are a casual internet user or a remote worker, protecting your data and devices is critical. So, this Cybersecurity Awareness Month, take a moment to explore five practical ways to stay safe online, outlined by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Essential Cybersecurity Tips

1. Update Your Software

Software updates are your first line of defense against cyber threats. They patch vulnerabilities and improve security features. While it can sometimes be annoying to update your software right when you’re about to do something else, the updates are essential to keep your system safe. If you delay updates, you’re leaving your system exposed to cyber threats.

Best practices:

  • Install updates immediately. Don’t hit “remind me later.”
  • Enable automatic updates for convenience.
  • Check for updates in your device settings, browser alerts or app notifications.

2. Use Strong Passwords

It can be tempting to use the same, simple password on multiple accounts. But weak passwords make it easy for hackers to access your account. Use a strong password that is long, random and unique.

Tips for strong passwords:

  • Use at least 16 characters.
  • Mix upper/lowercase letters, numbers, symbols and even spaces.
  • Consider passphrases made of 5–7 unrelated words.
  • Never reuse passwords across accounts.

3. Use a Password Manager

Managing dozens of strong passwords can be overwhelming. That’s where password managers come in.

With a password manager, you can:

  • Store and encrypt your passwords securely
  • Generate strong, unique passwords
  • Autofill login credentials, saving time
  • Avoid phishing by only filling in credentials on legitimate sites

4. Turn On Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second step to verify your identity. The boosted security is well worth the extra time it takes to authenticate.

Where to use MFA:

  • Email accounts
  • Financial platforms (banks, online stores)
  • Social media and other personal accounts

Most secure MFA methods:

  • Security keys (such as YubiKey)
  • Authenticator apps with number matching
  • Authenticator apps with one-time codes
  • Biometrics (fingerprint or facial recognition)
  • Text/email codes (least secure)

5. Recognize and Report Phishing

Phishing emails attempt to trick users into revealing personal information or clicking malicious links. It’s the most common form of cybercrime, with an estimated 3.4 billion spam emails sent every day according to AAG IT Services. Likewise Smishing (a phishing message sent via text message) is on the rise. Spotting these messages is key to staying safe.

Phishing red flags:

  • Urgent or fear-inducing messages
  • Suspicious sender addresses (such as “Amaz0n.com”)
  • Unexpected attachments or requests for personal info
  • Poor grammar or strange URLs

What to do if you suspect phishing:

  • Don’t click links or attachments
  • Don’t share personal information
  • Verify the sender through known contact methods
  • Report it to your IT department or email provider
  • Use email filters to block phishing attempts
  • Delete the message
