What is gigabit fiber internet?
Gigabit fiber internet is high-speed internet that transmits data over fiber optic cables at 1 gigabit per second, or 1 Gbps for short. It’s also commonly referred to Gig internet and is equivalent to 1,000 megabits per second, or Mbps.
Gigabit fiber internet isn’t just faster than other forms of internet connections — it’s also more reliable. Fiber optic cables transmit data at a more consistent speed than copper cables, which slow down over long distances and when other people are using the internet near you. Fiber internet is stable. While fiber internet needs electrical power to run, it is less susceptible to disruptions due to weather, such as cloud cover or storms. Also, gigabit fiber internet can handle the demands of multiple devices connected at once because it has a higher bandwidth.
What is a gigabit network?
A gigabit network is a high-speed, top performing network built to transmit data at speeds up to 1 Gbps. There are multiple components necessary to establish a gigabit network in your home or office, including the internet connection from your service provider, the cables connecting your devices to the network, and your router and switch.
At Smithville, our Fast Fiber Internet delivers a gigabit connection to your home, reaching speeds up to 1 Gbps. We can deliver even faster speeds for businesses, up to 10 Gbps. Our connection is FTTH or FTTP, which stands for “fiber to the home” or “fiber to the premises.” Other internet service providers (also known as ISPs) may offer 1 Gbps FTTx, which means that their fiber cable stops short of your home or office, traveling on another type of cable the rest of the way. One example is FTTC, which stands for “fiber to the curb.” This means the fiber cable stops at a cabinet that serves multiple homes and then uses another, less reliable cable to connect the internet to a home. This can slow down your speeds and reduce reliability. Our FTTH connection brings fiber optic cables straight from our core to your door.
Next, to set up your gig network you’ll need to ensure that your network infrastructure can support gig speeds. This includes Ethernet cables at least Cat 5 or higher. Additionally, you’ll need a switch and router that can handle gig speeds. Smithville technicians can provide a gig-ready networking switch and router for you when you sign up for Wi-Fi+ or Wi-Fi+ for Business.
How does gigabit fiber broadband help consumers?
Gigabit fiber broadband helps consumers because it allows people and businesses to use the internet without limits. With upload and download speeds up to 1 Gbps, there’s nothing standing in your way or slowing you down. You can connect as many devices as you need to support your business or create a smart home to gain security, convenience and peace of mind. You can stream videos, TV and music without lagging or buffering. You can download and upload large files quickly with symmetrical speeds. When you need to connect, the speed is consistent and fast so that you don’t even notice the internet working. Smithville’s gigabit fiber broadband helps open doors of opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities to flourish.
How do subscribers rate or review gigabit fiber service?
Subscribers can rate or review gigabit fiber services online. While there are many review websites, three of the most popular are Google reviews, Facebook reviews and Angi. By searching an internet service provider on Google, you can see and submit your own Google review and star rating listed in Google’s search results. To rate an ISP on Facebook, find the company’s Facebook page, then click the Reviews tab on their page. To review ISPs on Angi, go to Angi.com, search for the company, then click “Write a review.” If you’ve had a great experience with Smithville, we’d appreciate your review on any or all of these rating locations, including Google, Facebook and Angi.
What gigabit broadband is now available?
Gigabit broadband is now available in many locations across the United States. However, gig internet isn’t available everywhere. Before you move to a new residence or business location, always check to see what internet services are available. If you are moving to a new residence, search your new address on Fiber Homes to make sure your next home has high-speed internet available.
There are several providers that now offer gigabit broadband, including Smithville. We offer gig speeds with our Fiber Internet services. Residential subscribers can get speeds up to 1 Gbps. Business subscribers can get up to 1 Gbps, or can opt for our even faster 10 Gbps broadband service. Check availability of our fiber broadband.
Is gigabit internet available in my area?
At Smithville, we offer Fast, Fiber Internet in southern and central Indiana. Check our Fiber build map to see if your address is in our service area for gigabit fiber internet. If you’re outside of our service area, you can search your address on the FCC National Broadband Map. When you see the results, pay close attention to the “technology” used by each ISP and the upload and download speeds. Look for ISPs that provide Fiber to the Premises and at least 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps) speeds for both upload and download speeds. If they meet these criteria, then they provide gigabit internet, like Smithville. We provide all our Fiber Internet subscribers with gigabit internet. Using fiber optic cables, we bring fiber to the home or premises and deliver speeds up to 1 Gbps for residential properties and up to 10 Gbps for businesses.
How do I run a Gigabit speed test?
There are several websites that offer gigabit speed tests. You can run a speed test on our website. The results show your download speed, upload speed, ping and jitter. When you’re testing the speed of your internet, it’s best to run it several times throughout the day. Some internet services fluctuate depending on how many other people are using the internet at the same time. Other ISPs throttle speeds after you’ve reached a data cap limit. At Smithville, our Fiber Internet is reliable throughout the day, and we offer unlimited data without slowing down our subscribers.
